Scholarship encourages entrepreneurial spirit

As the youngest member in a family of five, there was always an expectation that I would follow in my brother and sister’s footsteps (who are both pharmacists). I did complete a science degree in my undergrad (psychology), but that led me to discover my passion for marketing.

Brian TamAs I was taking consumer behaviour-related classes, I realized how much I loved understanding how people think, what made people choose one product over another, and how a slight change in marketing positioning can have a huge impact on purchasing behaviours.

As a result, I chose to pursue my MBA specializing in marketing.

My family and friends were a bit skeptical at first (since it was a different career route from anyone in my family) but I knew that if I pursued what I love doing and worked hard at it, success would follow.

I chose to attend my MBA at Laurier because of the highly regarded co-op program, and also because of the great professors and student body that I heard about before entering the program. During my time at Laurier, I met some of my best friends. There was also a strong sense of camaraderie throughout the entire program, which makes me proud to be a Laurier graduate.

The highlight of my entire MBA program was receiving the Walter and Jean Hachborn Award of Distinction.  This award provided me with the assurance that I chose the right career path, and that if I continued to follow my passion for marketing, success will follow.

I recently completed my MBA program and just started working as a marketing associate for Nestle Purina (which creates products that Home Hardware sells at its stores!)

In the next 5 years, I am aiming to be the Marketing Manager for a retail or consumer packaged goods company. In addition, I am working on an e-commerce store that I will be launching in the near future.

My experience at Laurier has really provided a lot of great opportunities that has allowed me to get to where I am today. For example, because of the co-op program, I was able to secure a marketing intern position at Nestle Waters, which then made it easier for me to get a position with Nestle Purina. During the program, I also utilized my marketing knowledge by helping several not-for-profits with marketing strategies to help increase their sales, which was a great experience.

I am extremely grateful and appreciative of this award that I received. I would like to thank Paul Straus and all of the dealers, staff members, and corporate staff members of Home Hardware Stores Limited for their generosity. I now feel like I am part of the Home Hardware family as well.

The Walter and Jean Hachborn Award of Distinction was established by dealers, staff members and corporate staff members of Home Hardware Stores Limited to recognize co-founder, Walter Hachborn, and his wife, Jean. The award is granted to a full-time student entering the Masters of Business Administration Program at Wilfrid Laurier University. The successful recipient must demonstrate business acumen, an entrepreneurial spirit and strong work ethic, combined with a proven interest in the field of retail or marketing. He must also demonstrate a sincere commitment to his community through active participation and/or community engagement.
