Types of Gifts
There are a variety of different types of donations:
Giving monthly is an easy, convenient way to support Laurier. You can set any amount that you would like for monthly giving for any period of time (ongoing or a few years). You can stop payments at any time. Set up your monthly gift through automatic credit card payments.
You can support a cause that matters to you such as one of our key priorities, or you can choose to allow your gift to go where it’s needed most. Gifts of all sizes have an impact. Donations are tax deductible and a receipt is issued.
A pledge is a set amount that is paid over a certain number of years. For example, if you would like to make a $5,000 commitment, you can spread it out over five years so that you are contributing $1,000 a year (that’s less than $100 a month).
Legacy giving allows you to support Laurier through a gift in your will, or even direct an immediate gift to the university as part of your estate-planning process. Legacy gifts require careful thought and discussion with your family, attorney, accountant, or financial advisor. If you are considering making this type of gift to Laurier, please let us know. Our staff is ready to work with you and your advisor in confidence and without obligation to help you explore the best method of giving for your circumstance.
Over 500 Canadian companies will match donations their employees make. Matching dollars are all designated to the same area you’ve already chosen to support. If your employer does have a matching gift program, your gift to Laurier may be doubled or even tripled. Check the list on the donation page to find out if your company will match your gift. If you’re not sure, let us know who your employer is, and we will investigate it for you.
All donors receive a charitable tax receipt. There is no minimum donation cut-off. For information on the tax credits available to Canadians for a charitable gift, please visit the Canada Revenue Agency’s Charitable donation tax credit calculator. U.S. citizens are entitled to a charitable deduction for gifts to a Canadian university, provided you or a family member is or was enrolled. If you or a family member didn’t attend Laurier, you may still be eligible for a charitable deduction. Individuals, corporations, organizations or foundations may make a gift through the “Friends of Wilfrid Laurier University.” Please contact Duncan Malcolm at 519.884.0710 x3866.
Laurier respects your wishes. If you prefer, your gift may listed as ‘anonymous’ in the university’s public announcements and recognition of donors. Anonymous donors must provide their personal information for tax purposes, but that information will remain confidential within the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.
In appreciation of your generosity in Building Canada’s Best Business School, Laurier will honour individuals, corporations and foundations throughout the campaign. Recognition may include engaging supporters in celebratory events and permanently recognizing support in the lobby of the new Lazaridis Hall. Contact us to find out more.
